How do i reset the radio code for a 1997 volkswagen golf If your radio is in SAFE mode. You will need to have the four digit code, then hold down the MODE and SCAN buttons at the same time till 1000 comes up on the radio use the volume button to scan up and down till code is entered. Press and hold MODE and SCAN again till SAFE flashes again, if code is correct your radio will work. You have three tries to get it right then you have to wait around 30min to retry.

If you don't have your code you can try to call a dealership and give them the number on the back of your deck, however they are not suppose to give out the codes over the phone. I had to call around ten dealerships till I found one in Iowa city,Iowa that gave me the code over the phone. The dealer said it's the third one over from the bottom right, not sure which fuse number it is on the panel.

The dealer's answer is ambiguous, but I'd guess he means #15. Answer Also you could look at the fuse panel cover, it gives a listing of fuses and what they are for. The 'FUSECARD' gives only the icon that corresponds to each fuse.

In many cases the icon is unclear, or there is an icon of a book with an '!' Inside, which would seem to refer one to the (insane, over-complex, incomplete) manual.

The manual is (of course) no help, and merely refers you back to the FUSECARD. I will never own a VW ever again, ever. Good luck with yours.

To the left and right of your factory radio are narrow vertical slots. Volkswagen, as well as a local car audio shop, can provide you with keys that slide into these slots to hook onto the stereo and pull it out. If you are the DIY type and want to fashion your own, the hooking point is in the lower portion of these slots.

Design your stereo removal key with the 'hook' facing down to properly catch the unit with damaging it. Once the keys have 'caught' the stereo, simply pull it towards you in a slow, controlled yet firm manner. NOTE: The top and bottom of your stereo unit have indentations that are filled by flexible semi-spheres with a tong-like action to secure the radio in place. The more you adjust these, the more flexible they will become. The end result is that you may need a new harness for your unit in order for it to stay in place. The owner's manual as well as the Workshop Manual both state that three consecutive incorrect attempts at disabling the anti-theft system will render the radio inoperable and that it must be replaced. This is absolutely not true!

There is a very simple procedure which will restore your radio to operability. It does not involve removing the radio and requires about 30 seconds to complete.

In the past we had chosen not to publish the code. However, this information was previously released on the net by folks who really didn't think security was important. We believe that poor security is worse than no security since it may lead to a false belief that things are secure when they're far from being so. As a result, we've decided to publish this controversial, yet widely known procedure. For most 1990 - 1996テつス factory radios: To determine if this radio has been set with an antitheft user code, remove battery power from it for at least 45 seconds. When battery power is restored with no user code set, the radio's operation is immediately restored. If a code is set 'cod e' flashes in the radio's display.

When 'cod e' flashes in the radio's display after battery power is restored, and you know your antitheft user code, the radio's operation can be restored by following your Owner's Manual 'If Antitheft system is Activated' procedure. If you don't know your antitheft user code, or to remove one previously set, follow the same procedure three times entering an invalid 1 to 4-digit user code each time. Once an invalid 1 to 4-digit user code is entered three times, 'err' flashes in the radio's display. When flashing 'err' displays, the radio is now set to accept the following re-set procedure. Press the # 1 button Press Stop/Eject Press Am/Fm Press Clock Button - - - - Will appear. Enter code 4 9 8 9 Press F/Forward & Reverse at the same time and hold for a couple seconds. The code should now be removed.

Follow the instructions in your manual to set a new code. For 1996テつス - 1997 (has number 1273 on it) To determine if this radio has been set with an antitheft user code, remove battery power from it for at least 10 seconds.

Press FForward This should give you the '-' Enter 4 9 8 9 Press Prog/Auto M. First, then press Scan (Hold both buttons down at the same time and make sure to follow this order. If you reverse the order it will not work.) The display should now read 'Good' The radio should now work again.' Two solutions for you depending on radio model. With the VIN of your VW car and the serial of the radio in hand - call a VW dealership service dept. They should be able to tell you code free of charge.

(My car was purchased used and when the battery was changed the radio locked itself into SAFE mode. I pulled the radio out (with radio tools purchased at the local CT for $8), got the serial and called a random VW place and they gave it to me.). There is also a post I saw on a VW forum that if the radio is a Monsoon that the last 4 digits of the serial off the radio IS the code. I'm about to test that theory later this week. Hope one of the two work for you:).
