I would first question the Deere mechanic- if he truly can diagnose it as a worn clutch pack then he should be able to tell you the shift pressures during the pressure test. If he can't, then it is just speculation and not a serious diagnosis. I am not familiar with the specifics of your powershift transmission (in particular if you have the torque converter or direct drive), but the typical first diagnostic step for a powershift transmission after checking fluid levels and changing filters is to test the shift pressures.

You can perform this with a pressure test gauge fitted to a test port on the transmission. A significant deviation from the pressures in each gear listed in the technical (service) manual will often indicate if you have an internal leak or worn clutch pack. The procedure to do so would be in your technical manual.

If you are serious about finding out the next step (repair or replace transmission, or scrap) then you should get that manual. They are available online as a download from Deere (admittedly not cheap) but you could have the manual today and go from there. Even if you decide not to do the tests yourself, reading about how they are performed will make you more knowledgable and make you capable of calling BS on a service tech that may not have gone through the proper diagnostic sequence. Also you should have a transmission pressure gauge and temp gauge on the cab- did you see anything abnormal on that (i.e. Overheating at some point)? The Tech did come out and test the pressure.

He found nothing abnormal there. We have not had it over heat. It worked when we parked it for the fall but when we went to use it the next spring the 1st in forward and reverse did not work.

Or they had no power. Might move a couple of feet and then stop. I did replace the hydraulic filter.

No improvement. That was suggested by the Tech. I probably will hire someone to do the work for me as my mechanical skills and place and time to do it are limited. What I am trying to do is get an idea of what it could be before I start to order parts and line up someone to fix it. Any help or suggestions on this issue are greatly appreciated. Thanks for the response.

Plainsscout wrote:So replacing the transmission fixes the clutch as well? I have a lead on a rebuilt transmission. If the problem is the 1st gear clutch pack, then yes replacing the transmission would fix the issue because it is basically a component within the transmission housing. As a general rule when an internal transmission component fails it is a good idea to also replace the torque converter, but can't say if that is true with the TC on that transmission and it is also possible you could do a flush. The tech manual should have a detail breakdown of the transmission components and also how to remove and reinstall it which will be most of the battle if you are just doing a swap.

I probably know just enough about these transmissions to be dangerous Seriously, my experience comes from having worked with a variety of transmissions in trucks and heavy equipment plus reading about these over the years. There are others on this board with much more direct experience with these such as Digitup2 so am just trying to give some helpful advice in the meantime. There are a lot of posts you can actively search for on this board by Digitup2 and others that may be helpful, including photos of the repair process for HLR powershift transmissions.
