As a mechanical fitter apprentice you will be required to undergo a period of college/training (provider-based training) usually lasting one year. During this year, you will be trained in aspects of the discipline such as health and safety; manual handling; identification of different material types and forms; marking out metal; cutting and shaping materials using hand tools; shaping materials using machine tools such as lathes and milling machines; assembling mechanical components; and positioning and installing large assemblies. In the 2nd, 3rd and final year of your apprenticeship, you’ll gain further experience in the processes and techniques, although this time it will be in the setting of an engineering construction site.
