In search of a mechanism to tie reliable knots despite the poor baling twine quality of the time, August Claas developed his own knotter system for efficient straw binding in the early 1920s. The young company was issued several patents for its knotter system, including a patent granted in 1923 for the knotter with floating knotter jaw that later became the company's logo. The patented CLAAS knotter was awarded the coveted DLG silver medal at the 30th DLG (Deutsche Landwirtschafts-Gesellschaft e.V.) exhibition in Hamburg.

The knotter system established the basis for CLAAS straw binders and balers and was continuously optimised. Over 400,000 balers and straw binders have been manufactured since production began.
